Beer Radar: News from Victory, and a Flyers-Penguins confrontation brew

New labels (below) are coming from Victory Brewing next week, ones that gives the area’s largest brewery a unified if cartoonish look. In the past, Victory’s branding seemed caught between the tradition-bound styling of Helles Lager and Prima Pils, and the off-beat images of Golden Monkey and HopDevil. Starting next week, they’ll have consistent new packaging that “contemporizes the look, while making it easier… to find on today’s crowded craft shelves.” The brewery is also adding three new year-round beers to its lineup: Twisted Monkey (5.8% abv) Belgian-style mango blond; No Brainer IPA (6.8% abv) and Cloud Walker (6.8% abv) a hazy lactose IPA….

Suburbia’s favorite son, Tired Hands (Ardmore), will take another step inside the city, announcing plans to open its own restaurant in Kensington. Called St. Oner’s, the 50-seat restaurant will operate on Frankford Avenue near its High Harvest Biergarten that opened in September… Well Crafted Beer, the new Lansdale brewery, began canning this week. Look for DDH Hop Monger IPA, Intervarietal Vol. 2 IPA and Midnight Love Oatmeal Coffee Porter…

Braeloch Brewing (Chesco) is getting close to an opening date. The Kennett Square brewery is working out the kinks and introducing itself to the locals with a series of pre-opening Flight & Pint Nights. Most have sold out, but there are a few $25 tix left for Feb. 17Mainstay Independent, which had planned to shut down while its home at Craft Hall (Fishtown) was renovated, will remain open on Saturdays. Look for Demolition Drafts from noon to 8 p.m. during Pop-Up Saturdays…

You’ve heard of collaboration brews that celebrate the camaraderie of small breweries; how about a “confrontation” beer? Sly Fox (Montco) and Rivertowne (Pittsburgh) have brewed one up in honor of the rivalry between the Flyers and the Penguins: Glove Dropper Blood Orange IPA, a salute to “Pennsylvania’s bloodiest and bitterest intrastate rivalry.” It’ll be tapped exclusively at P.J. Whelihan’s and the Pour House on Feb. 23, the night of the teams’ match-up in NHL Stadium Series at the Linc…


The taproom at River Horse Brewing (Jersey) is now serving a flight of chocolates and beer. It’s your choice of beers served with tasty treats from Pierre’s Chocolates, including ganache infused with River Horse Mocha Lisa Porter…Savor, the annual Brewers Association food-and-beer festival in Washington, will feature several Philly Beer World breweries. Cape May, Dogfish Head, Double Nickel, Neshaminy Creek and Wallenpaupack will be serving. Tix for the May 17 event go on sale Feb. 27… The Brewers of Pennsylvania, the state’s official brewers guild, has brought on a deputy director: Adam Harris. He’s the former Republican chair of the state House Liquor Control Committee, representing the 82nd District in central Pennsylvania…
